Police Scotland continue to make arrests and keep people safe over Christmas
Police Scotland continued to keep people safe over the Christmas period as officers plan for a busy New Year.
On Christmas Day, our control room received more than 1500 calls to 999, and nearly 2000 calls to 101.
Acting under warrant, officers investigating an armed robbery at a shop on Lynedoch Street, Greenock from Monday, 23 December arrested a 53-year-old man late on Christmas Eve. A second man, aged 28, was also arrested that evening. Both spent Christmas Day in custody and were due to appear in court.
Around 1.30pm on Christmas Day, officers attended Edmiston Drive in Glasgow following a report of youths in possession of weapons. Two knives were recovered and a 15-year-old was arrested in connection with the incident.
Our police dogs were also working over the festive period. PD Nash supported officers on Christmas Day in Dundee after the occupant of a car left the scene of a crash on Balgillo Road. A 29-year-old man was arrested and charged with road traffic offences, and was due to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court on Friday, 27 December, 2024.
New Year is also expected to be just as busy with officers policing the Hogmanay Celebrations in Edinburgh and football match in Glasgow where proportionate policing plans are in place.

Assistant Chief Constable Gary Ritchie said: “Our people demonstrate skill, goodwill and professionalism all year round, but I want to recognise their commitment at this time of year.
“Policing doesn’t stop over the festive period and while families across Scotland have been sat around dinner tables together, our officers have continued to provide a challenging and essential public service for our communities round the clock.
“I would take this opportunity to publicly reiterate and record my thanks for all they do and offer my best wishes for the New Year ahead.”
