Inverness Youth Street event to be held tomorrow
Officers in Inverness are inviting young people to join us at the Inverness Youth Street event tomorrow, Friday 2 August 2024.
The free event will take place at Eastgate Shopping Centre and Falcon Square between 12pm and 4pm tomorrow.
The event forms part of Operation Respect, a multi-agency initiative aimed at increasing youth engagement and reducing youth associated anti-social behaviour in and around Inverness City Centre.
The event is just one strand of Operation Respect. Other policing activity includes increased city centre policing patrols and enforcement to tackle issues such as underage sales of vaping products, vandalism, fire-starting and misuse of the city e-Bikes.
The day has been organised by police and the Highland Council, along with High Life Highland and many organisations who provide services and support to young people.
There will be a large number of activities on offer, inlcuding, street football, boxing, disc-golf, rowing, music and arts and crafts.
There will also be a range of stalls providing information and advice on activities, support, and career pathways available to young people in Inverness.
Chief Inspector Judy Hill said: "This event will start the process of re-engaging with young people, with the aim of reducing anti-social behaviour by providing youths with alternative activities and options.
"Throughout the day, we hope to capture some youth perspectives about what services are lacking and how we can engage our young people in Inverness better.
"We would like to thank our partners at Eastgate Shopping Centre, who have provided us with a venue and facilities for the day and all the local food retailers who have donated or provided discount refreshments for the event. The support of the local business community is greatly appreciated."
Leader of Inverness and Area Cllr Ian Brown said: “With our Operation Respect partners, this summer holiday initiative aimed at young people is a great idea for those looking for something to do during the holidays. How many times have we all heard ‘I’m bored there’s nothing to do during the school holidays!’ Well I’m delighted to say there is now and its this free event for young people running at the Eastgate Centre and Falcon Square this Friday. Come along and join in the fun.”
The event is free to attend and is aimed at young people aged 12years and over. Activities will be based on Falcon Square and within the Eastgate Shopping Centre.
