Scottish Police Memorial Trust Annual Service of Remembrance 2023
Senior Police Scotland officers joined the family, friends and colleagues of officers who died on duty at an annual memorial event.
The Scottish Police Memorial Trust's Service of Remembrance took place at Police Scotland Headquarters, Tulliallan, on Wednesday, 6 September, 2023 to venerate all of those who passed away while in uniform.
This year, the names of nine new officers have been added to the roll of honour, which commemorates the life and service of every Scottish officer who has died on duty since 1812.
The memorial stones now bear 337 names, with the new additions representing former constabularies in Glasgow, Greenock, Aberdeen, Dundee and from within railway policing services.
Co-founder of the Scottish Police Memorial Trust, Christine Fulton MBE, whose husband PC Lewis Fulton was killed on duty in Glasgow in 1994, said: “The annual service of remembrance is a very poignant event, as it allows us to reconnect with old friends and colleagues and reflect on those we lost in the line of duty.
“Since last year, nine new names have been added to the memorial and I am sure the families of these officers welcome the opportunity to see their loved ones immortalised on the Roll of Honour, so they can be celebrated by the policing family for years to come.
Deputy Chief Constable Designate, Fiona Taylor, QPM, said: “The annual service has become an essential day in the policing calendar since the memorial was established in 2004. This is an important day of reflection and friendship for the policing family in Scotland and beyond.
“We know policing is not simply a job, but a calling. Not what we do, but who we are.
“Today, together, we honour and remember family, friends and colleagues who have died while discharging those duties in Scotland.”
Wreaths were laid by Deputy Chief Constable Designate, Fiona Taylor, QPM, Cabinet Secretary for Justice and Home Affairs, Angela Constance MSP, and the Lord Lieutenant of Fife, as well as on behalf of the Scottish Police Memorial Trust, British Transport Police, HM Inspectorate of Constabulary in Scotland, the Scottish Police Authority, the Scottish Police Federation, the Association of Scottish Police Superintendents, and the Retired Police Officers Association, Scotland.
The Scottish Police and Federation Pipe Band were also in attendance where they performed and marched alongside the Mounted Section at the start and end of the ceremony.
