Shetland Islands Council sign up to volunteer police scheme in a first for the isles
Shetland Islands Council has become one of the first organisations in the region to sign up to a special Police volunteer scheme.
Assistant Chief Constable for the North, Emma Bond, met with the Chief Executive of Shetland Islands Council yesterday as it become one of the first organisations to sign up to the Employer Supported Policing scheme (ESP) - a partnership between employers, their staff and the Police where staff are granted time to train as Special Constables (SPCs).
ACC Bond, who is visiting Shetland to meet local officers and staff and other members of the community, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Shetland Islands Council has agreed to sign up to our ESP scheme which will allow their employees time off to be a Special Constable. It’s a fantastic opportunity for businesses to actively get involved in their communities and the transferable skills their staff can bring back to the workplace is invaluable.
“SPCs come from all walks of life and the community knowledge and fresh perspective they bring to their teams is invaluable. As well as helping to keep their community safe, I also hope it’s an experience like no other where they gain a unique insight in policing.
“I am extremely proud of all my colleagues be they regular officers, staff or Specials, and particularly grateful to people from our communities who volunteer, giving up their time to help support and protect our local people.”
Maggie Sandison, Chief Executive of Shetland Islands Council, said: “We value the positive contribution that our staff make to island life in so many different ways. We’re pleased to support the Employer Supported Policing scheme, so that our staff may train as Special Constables and use their diverse skills and knowledge to keep our community safe.”
