Operation Seabird day of action in Aberdeen
Operation Seabird aims to engage and educate the public about the sensitivities of the coastline, and how simple changes in their behaviour could reduce pressure on our unique wildlife, throughout the UK.
On Thursday, 14 July officers carried out a day of action in Aberdeen in a bid to raise awareness of the impact recreational activities can have on local wildlife.
The local day of action followed a number of reports made to Police Scotland and Whale and Dolphin Conservation regarding cetacean disturbances along the East Coast.
Focussing around Aberdeen Harbour, the event saw officers engage with members of the public and businesses to raise awareness of issues surrounding disturbing wildlife including dolphins and seals. There was a particular focus around making tour boat companies aware as more people make their way to the coast.
Constable Mike Urquhart said: “The UK coast draws thousands of visitors each year and while tourism is important, the rise in recreational activities along the coast can increase pressure on marine wildlife.
“Our message is whilst enjoying your leisure time at our amazing UK Coast. Please be aware this is also habitat for an array of wildlife.
“We ask that you adhere to any signage, stick to paths and codes of conduct. On the water please maintain your distance, reduce your speed and limit your observation time to prevent disturbances.
“If you witness a wildlife disturbance or crime on the coast please contact your local police and ask for wildlife team or officer to be made aware, quoting Operation Seabird."
