The incident happened on a footpath between Knockinlaw Road and Western Road around 3.30pm on Sunday, 3 April, 2022.
The 45-year-old man was taken to University Crosshouse Hospital for treatment and was later released.
Officers are keen to speak to a man seen in the area at the time. He’s described as white, in his 40s, around 6ft tall, bald or shaved hair and prominent ears. He was wearing a yellow or orange jacket, jeans and grey and orange trainers.
Detective Constable Nicola Fraser said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack and it is vital we trace the person responsible.
“Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances and officers will be increasing patrols in the area to reassure the public.
