Longest serving police officer in Scotland retires after 54 years of service
After a remarkable 54 years of service, Special Constable Hugh Duncan has retired, making him the longest serving police officer in Scotland.
SC Duncan first joined the police force as a volunteer for Aberdeen City Police in 1968, and in 1970 transferred to Aberdeen County stationed in the Turiff area where he has served ever since.
Over the years, SC Duncan has shown incredible dedication to the role, balancing his duties with his day job as a local farmer. The wealth of experience and knowledge he has brought to the local Community Policing Team is widely praised amongst colleagues and has undoubtedly has contributed significantly to keeping the area safe.
In 2012, SC Duncan was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for distinguished service as part of the New Years Honours List and in 2019 was presented a Police Scotland long-service award by Assistant Chief Constable Hawkins.
To mark his retirement and all his achievements, SC Duncan and his daughter were invited to an award presentation at Tulliallan Police College. The event took place on Wednesday, 30 March, with CC Iain Livingstone in attendance along with ACC John Hawkins, and North East Area Commander James Harrison.
Following the event, CC Iain Livingstone said “It was an absolute privilege to be able to present this award to SC Hugh Duncan today for what is an outstanding achievement.
“To have served our police force for more than half a century speaks volumes about Hugh’s character and dedication. I commend him for his tireless years of service and wish him the very best in his retirement.”
ACC John Hawkins “I’d like to thank Hugh for his commitment and long standing service to policing in Scotland. He has served his local community for over 50 years and in doing so has given up significant hours of his own time, year upon year.
“Hugh has been a great credit to the team and all his colleagues and I am sure he will be sorely missed by everyone he has worked with.”
“Volunteers like Hugh are immeasurably valuable to the police force and I am sure that he will be an inspiration to many who are considering joining.”
