Wilful fire-raising - Murray Square, East Kilbride
Detectives are asking for the help of the public following an incident of wilful fire-raising at the premises of Pepe's Piri Piri in Murray Square in East Kilbride. Sometime around 11.40pm on Thursday, 28 January, 2021, a Honda car was intentionally driven into the shutters of Pepe's Piri Piri. The car was then set on fire, however the fire did not spread to the actual building. The fire was extinguished by the Fire and Rescue Service. No-one was injured in the incident.
Detective Constable Grant McKechnie of Police Scotland's Lanarkshire Division CID said: "This was a completely reckless act which could have had catastrophic consequences. At the time of the incident a man was seen to exit the Honda car and run off towards Murray Road, where he may have entered a Mercedes car which then drove off towards The Queensway. Also around this time we have been made aware of a small hatchback style car which was in the car park in Murray Square when this incident took place.
"I would ask anyone who may have been in the area to get in touch with us if they saw or heard anything which might assist in this investigation. I would also ask anyone who may have been driving the in area in a vehicle fitted with a sat-nav to check their system to see if it might contain any footage which could be of assistance. Callers should use the 101 number and give the reference number 3592 of 28 January."
