Police urge safety following crashes involving pedestrians
Police are reminding all road users to remain vigilant when travelling following a number of collisions involving pedestrians.
Since April this year, officers in the West of Scotland have seen a sharp rise in the number of pedestrians being killed or seriously injured on our roads.
Chief Inspector Lorraine Napier, Area Commander for the West said: “Unfortunately there have been a number of collisions involving pedestrian on our roads this year, which have resulted in serious injury and in some cases death.
“The safety of everyone on the roads is paramount and I would encourage all road users, particularly drivers and pedestrians to be vigilant and look out for one and other.
"I would appeal to pedestrians to be alert to vehicles, encourage the use of crossing facilities and ensure they leave plenty of time to cross safely where no such facilities are present. When walking on unlit roads remember to wear bright clothing, carry a torch, clip a red light to the back of clothing or wear a head torch which has a built in red light the rear, this will give drivers more time to see you and react. In addition I would appeal to drivers to be look out for pedestrians, especially children in built up areas.
"Police Scotland is committed to improving safety on our roads across the country and we continue to work closely with partners on all aspects of road safety.”
