Reporting a sexual crime
Our priority is you. We want to know that you are safe and well. We want to know if you need medical attention and are not in any immediate danger.
You will always be treated with respect and dignity during any contact with the police.
The investigation
Our investigation will, at first, involve getting the details of the attack. We will then arrange for a forensic medical examination. This will be carried out by trained medical professionals.
We will then get a statement. This can be done at a time and place to suit you. It can be done with a friend/family member or counsellor there to offer support.
A Sexual Offences Liaison Officer will work with you and explain what will happen with the police investigation.
The questions we will ask at first are:
- When did the attack happen?
- Do you require medical assistance?
- Where are you now?
- Is the attacker still nearby?
- Are you in danger?
- Do you know the name of your attacker?
- Where did the attack happen?
- Do you still have the clothing worn at the time? If yes, then keep them in a bag.
It is better to report to us as early as possible. This increases the opportunity for us to gather forensic evidence.
